How to Create Mail Rules with Microsoft OutLook Express:

To Begin:

Open Outlook.  Click Tools.  Click Message Rules, then click Mail.

Creating A Mail Rule:

(Part 1) You will need to set the conditions of your rule.  Scroll through your options here.  The most common way to create an effective mail rule will be to target the Subject.  Here for instance you could target a specific word or phrase.

(Part 2) You will need to set the action of this rule.  The action could include deleting moving to a specific location or forwarding said e-mail to a third party.

(Part 3) Describes the rule as your have created it.  Also here is where you will enter in things specific to the rule, as shown below in the demonstration.

(Part 4) Is the name of the newly created rule.  This can be left as is or renamed to something of your liking.

DemonstrationThis example will demonstrate how the mail rules work with Conditions targeting the subject line and Action set to delete.

First, click on the box next to both Subject in the condition box and Delete in the action box.  Next, under the Description box you will see a highlighted line of text (as shown in the image on the right).  Click here to enter specific words to be screened out.  Now a box will appear that will ask you for the specific words you want to delegate.  By typing in the words in the first box and clicking the Add button you will add each specific word or phrase to this mail rule.  When you have added all the words you want to block, click OK.

Note: This is just a demonstration. There are many other options here to choose from that many be more applicable in your specific situation.

Last Check:

This should be what your final product looks like:

Make sure you have competed each step of the configuration of your new mail rule, meaning you should have two boxes checked and information added to the rule description field.

To check the information entered into the description field re-click on the blue highlighted text. If nothing has been entered into this field then re-enter the text.

Mail Rule Completed:

When your Mail Rule is done you will be back at the Message Rule display. When you have finished your mail rule click OK to leave Message Rules.

More Mail Rules:

To make more mail rules as you just did, repeat the steps above; however, instead of going straight to the create mail New rule you start at the Message Rules page (the last image in the series). Here you will need to click on New to create a new mail rule.
